Approximately 350,000,000 people around the world are living with some form of depression, but that doesn’t mean that every case of this mental disorder is exactly the same. It’s easy to stigmatize those with neuropsychiatric conditions, but it’s extremely important to avoid doing that at all costs.

Psychiatric care is important, but understanding the truth of neuropsychiatric conditions is just as important as administering the proper care. Here are a few of the most common myths about neuropsychiatric conditions that seriously need to be busted.

MYTH: People with mental health disorders are violent

The truth is that only 3-5% of violent acts can be attributed to people affected by severe mental illnesses. Many people living with mental illnesses live their lives just as a neurotypical person would, and those who need neuropsychiatric doctors are well cared for.

MYTH: People with mental illnesses can’t hold down a job

This is a myth that is being defied every day. Mental illness doesn’t debilitate people in many cases. In fact, someone you work with my have a mental disorder that you never knew about. The biggest hurdle for this myth is overcoming the stigma that just because someone has a mental disorder means they’re incapable of completing a job.

MYTH: You can “snap out of” a mental illness

This is an especially harmful myth for those people suffering from depression and anxiety. Many people seem to think that these disorders can just be willed away with recreational therapy and fresh air, but the truth is that the people living with these disorders live with them every day. They don’t just come and go.

MYTH: Therapy is a waste of time

The exact opposite is true. In fact, therapy can be one of the most helpful tools that a neuropsychiatric patient can utilize in their treatment and recovery. The amount of therapy varies from patient to patient, but it is an important part of many patients’ treatment programs.

Whether you suffer from one of these disorders or not, it’s important to be informed about them, as well as about the people living with them every day.
